Introductory Commentary
 		The Japanese sense of design is evident in all aspects of life. It is found of course in traditional culture, and art and craft. But also it is seen in smaller ways, such as in food and gift presentation and packaging. It is perhaps most noticeable in the architectural features of houses, shops, and restaurants. These liven up and distinguish each place from its neighbours. Even in the modern tower buildings some design element is added, giving character and spirit to the building.
