When I walk around I view places like I was taking photos. It's what can be described as the Artists Eye. So the photograph is just a record of that. At times I feel drawn to take a photo even though I can't see why.
However I don't want to walk around only looking for photos, so I have to have some kinds of preferences, without being dogmatic. In my case, I avoid taking pictorial or souvenir photos. Also I find I don't like to intrude on peoples lives and so there are few human studies type photos. What I seem to favour are what I call photos of contrast. For me the value is the reality of a plain, unadorned condition of ordinary life, with the almost rudimentary signs of time and place that affect people and their existence. I found that in Japan there is a similar philosophy in what is called Wabi and Sabi.
To add some interest to the show the photos are sorted into groups of 4 within gallery rooms. For each of the rooms there is a short introductory commentary. A lot of the photos are from in and around Osaka. So if you are interested please have a look at the photos. |
